Adoption Story Spans Decades of Love, Resilience, and Hope
Over the last century, Catholic Charities has touched many lives and has played a pivotal role in shaping the familial landscape in the Archdiocese of New Orleans. As we continue to celebrate our centennial, we would like to share the personal journeys of people whose lives were forever changed by the programs of Catholic Charities.
December 23rd was a special day for Liz Broekman’s parents. Liz remembers how her mother Gina recounts arriving at St. Vincent’s Orphanage on Magazine Street in New Orleans in 1967 with her husband, Bobby. Watching one of the nuns enter the lobby to present them with their new daughter, they were asked what they wanted to name her. Overwhelmed with the sudden opportunity to adopt a child and not prepared to think about a name for very long, Gina blurted out the name Elizabeth.

| | Catholic Charities Celebrates Volunteers during Prayer Walk and Recognition Ceremony This past Saturday was truly special as we honored our incredible volunteers at Catholic Charities! Nearly 50 dedicated individuals came together for a Volunteer Prayer Walk and Recognition ceremony, celebrating National Volunteer Month and our centennial. Starting at Notre Dame Seminary College, the group walked the neighborhood, stopping to pray for our agency, clients, and volunteers. Thank you to all who make a difference every day with your selfless actions.
Your compassion knows no bounds!

| In 1966, Archbishop Philip Hannan showed true compassion by opening the Notre Dame Seminary swimming pool for the Summer Witness program. He provided a safe space for African Americans who were unfairly denied access to public pools in New Orleans.

Cheryl LaBorde bids farewell after nearly 30 years with Catholic Charities Cheryl LaBorde, Vice President of Finance and Administration for Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans, recently retired after 27 years with the organization.
During her farewell luncheon, she recalled the words of a recent homily at church which begged the question: Why are you here?
“I often ask myself about my time here with Catholic Charities. To me, working here has been more vocation than career. It’s about wanting to be part of helping people and giving back. Working for the Church is a choice and saying yes to the mission. Being here, we should expect things to be different from the for-profit world. It’s about others and not ourselves,” Cheryl said to her fellow colleagues.
Congratulations to Cheryl on her nearly three decades of service with Catholic Charities!
